Recipes

Worked, runnable trial files combining several columns for one goal; every recipe is verified against the Testable runtime.

RecipeGoal
Accuracy feedback blockScore keyboard responses and show correct, incorrect, or timeout feedback after every trial.
Accuracy-gated progressionLet participants advance to the test block only once their practice accuracy clears a threshold.
Adaptive staircaseHome in on a participant’s detection threshold by making trials harder after correct answers and easier after misses.
Ambient audio across trialsStart a looping background track on one trial and cut it at a later trial, leaving the rest of the block silent.
Attentional blinkPlay a rapid serial stream with two embedded targets, then ask about both, with the second target’s report expected to suffer at short lags.
AX-CPTPresent a cue and then a probe as two screens of one trial, with the correct response depending on the cue-probe pair.
Balanced condition windowsShuffle trials while keeping the conditions evenly distributed across the whole session, so neither condition clusters early or late.
Between-subject conditionsGive each participant one of two stimulus sets, while shared screens run for everyone.
Branching questionnaireRoute participants to different questionnaire pages depending on their answer to an earlier question.
Click the targetPresent several images as clickable response options and score the clicked target correctly even when display positions are shuffled.
Constrained condition orderShuffle trials while guaranteeing the same condition never runs more than twice in a row.
Counterbalanced key mappingGive half the participants one response-key mapping and half the reversed mapping, with matching instructions for each.
Counterbalanced sidesShow a fixed pair of stimuli with the left and right assignment drawn once per participant, and score the choice correctly whichever side the target lands on.
Deadline with timeout messageEnforce a response deadline and tell participants when they miss it, without interrupting trials they answer in time.
Dot-probe taskShow a pair of images side by side, replace one with a probe, and measure how fast the probe’s location is reported, in one row per trial.
Drag to respondLet participants drag stimuli into position over a scene and record where each one lands.
End-of-block summaryShow participants their accuracy and average response time on a summary screen after a block of scored trials.
Factorial vignette studyShow each participant one version of a scenario from a factorial design, then have everyone rate it on the same questions.
Fixation, then stimulusShow a fixation cross, then a single timed stimulus with a keyboard response.
Fixed trial durationMake every trial last exactly the same time whether the response comes early, late, or not at all.
Go/no-go taskScore a press as correct on go trials and a withheld response as correct on no-go trials.
Jittered RT taskMeasure choice reaction times with an unpredictable interval before each stimulus.
Label choice taskLet participants assign on-screen text labels to images by drag and drop, requiring a minimum amount of labelling before they can continue.
Likert block in random orderPresent a block of likert questions in a fresh random order per participant, with the answer options in a fixed order.
Likert scale with scored optionsSum a block of likert items into a named scale total by attaching points to each answer option.
Masked primingFlash a prime briefly, mask it, then time a choice response to a probe.
Match to sampleShow a sample stimulus, then an array of choices in shuffled positions, scoring the matching choice correctly wherever it appears.
Matrix question batteryAsk one set of items on a shared rating scale as a single matrix question, with the item order randomised per participant.
Minimal mixed projectThe smallest useful survey-plus-experiment file, showing instructions, a demographics page, a scored test block, and a closing question in one flow.
Multi-column list fileGive every generated trial its own settings, such as the correct key, from extra columns in the stimulus list CSV.
Nested block shuffleRandomise the order of whole task sections and of the mini-blocks inside each section, keeping every block’s trials together.
Opening demographics pageOpen the study with one required demographics page combining a numeric age box, a gender choice and an education dropdown.
Paired presentationPresent items in fixed pairs whose order shuffles for every participant while the members of each pair always stay together on screen.
Pick a subset of blocksGive each participant a random two of three self-contained tasks, each opening with its own instructions screen.
Practice, then testWalk participants through instructions and a feedback practice block before the scored test block.
Rank plus stars pageMeasure preferences with a ranking question and a star rating together on one survey page.
Rapid serial streamFlash a stream of stimuli in quick succession and collect one judgement once the stream ends.
Rating images beside questionsShow an image next to a likert question on each survey page, one image per page.
Replayed random orderShuffle a block once, then replay that exact order in a later block so both passes share identical order effects.
Respond after the clip endsPlay an audio clip and only accept the keypress once playback has finished, with RT measured from the end of the clip.
Running score displayKeep a points tally in the corner of the screen that updates after every scored trial.
Sample per conditionShow each participant a fixed number of trials per difficulty level, drawn fresh from a larger pool every session.
Scored quiz as a formRun a knowledge quiz as one question per page, scoring every answer and showing accuracy at the debrief.
Screener then branchAsk one eligibility question up front and end the session for participants who do not qualify.
Self-paced readingPresent sentences one segment at a time, advanced by the space bar, with a reading time recorded per segment and sentences shuffled as whole units.
Serial recallPlay a digit sequence hands-free, then collect a typed recall of the whole sequence, scored against the correct order.
Side-by-side comparisonShow two images left and right of centre and let the participant click their choice, scored correctly whichever side the target lands on.
Skip on responseAsk one question and jump participants who answer yes straight past the practice block.
Slider rating trialRate each stimulus on a configurable slider scale inside an experiment trial.
SOA manipulationVary the interval between prime onset and target onset across conditions using per-screen presTime lists.
Stream, then questionsPresent a sequence of stimuli on one self-advancing study trial, then ask two scored questions about it, with each stream and its questions shuffled as one unit.
Stroop colour namingShow colour words in matching or clashing ink and score keyboard responses to the ink colour.
Subset in a fixed orderDraw a fresh random subset of items for each participant while presenting the kept items in the order the trial file lists them.
Task switchingAlternate between two judgement tasks on the same stimuli in a controlled AABB pattern, so switch and repeat trials can be compared.
Three-screen sequencePresent a context scene, a studied pair, and a memory probe as three timed screens within a single trial.
Timed block with skipRun a block of trials against one shared countdown that ends the whole block when time runs out.
Trials from a stimulus listExpand a single trial-file row into one trial per item of an uploaded stimulus list, in a fresh random order each session.
Two-interval forced choicePresent two stimuli one after the other and ask which interval contained the target.
Type the answerCollect a free-typed answer in an input box on a test trial and score it against the expected text.
Video then buttonsPlay a video clip and only reveal the response buttons once playback has finished.
Visible countdown per trialShow a countdown that restarts on every trial, with the deadline itself enforced by the response window.
Voice-recorded picture namingCollect spoken picture-naming responses, saving an audio recording and the voice onset for every trial.
